Children At Risk e.V.: Committed to Children in Need
Children At Risk e.V. is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to the protection and support of children in difficult life situations since its founding. In the heart of Kolkata, in the Haridevpur district, the association runs the “House of Love” children’s home. Since 2004, this facility has provided many children with a safe and stable refuge.
The association traces its origins to a chance encounter in January 2003 in the streets of Kolkata: Tobias Steurer, Nancy Demoor and the Indian social worker Rakesh Jha decided then to give the street children a lasting perspective. In 2004 the first ten boys moved into a rented flat, in 2009 the project relocated to larger premises, and in 2014 the association moved into its own purpose-built children’s home. The work is intentionally measured not by the number of children cared for, but by the quality of the individual support given to each one.
The “House of Love” is more than just a shelter; it is a home where the children receive protection, education and the chance to develop socially. They enjoy regular meals, appropriate hygiene and medical care, and an upbringing that helps them to feel a sense of belonging in their new “family”. Alongside schooling, holistic development is given equal weight — sports and leisure activities play an important role.
A particular focus lies on schooling and vocational training. Because state schools in India do not provide reliable education, the children attend carefully chosen private schools and are additionally supported in the home by a private tutor. The first generation of the House of Love is now grown up — Madhu, Mustaquim and Shraban, for example, are currently at university. This is precisely where donations are most urgently needed today: for school and university fees, books and uniforms.
After twenty years at the head of the association, Sabine Steurer has handed the board over to her daughter Stephanie Steurer and Felix von Kienlin. She remains closely connected to the project and continues to support it actively.
The association is funded primarily by donations, which can be made to its account at Sparkasse Bodensee. The transparent and efficient use of the funds is guaranteed by the non-profit, registered legal structure of Children At Risk e.V., which is neither religiously nor ideologically affiliated.
For more information or to offer your active support, please contact us at info@children-at-risk.de. Every donation, large or small, makes a difference in the lives of these children.
One-time donations and project sponsorships for the work of the association as a whole are both possible. We deliberately no longer offer individual child sponsorships — we always fund the project as a whole so that all children benefit equally. Anyone who would like to get involved more actively in the association is warmly invited to get in touch about a membership.
100 % of your donation reaches the children. Children At Risk e.V. operates entirely on a voluntary basis — there are no administrative costs, salaries or other deductions. Every donated Euro goes directly into the care, support and education of the children at House of Love.
